Upcoming appearances

Good news!
Angela will be at Exterminator City in Greenwood, Seattle, WA on April 5, Saturday. It is a small underground comics market and the more people come the better! It should be good.

Then on June 7, Saturday, Abe and Angela will be at the always awesome Olympia Comics Festival.

These two appearances nicely bookend Angela's last quarter of the Natural Science Illustration program. So there will be a good chance of new natural science themed comics and prints.

Jet city comic show

Guess where you can find Abe and Angela this weekend? Tacoma at the Jet City Comic Show! Angela will of course be drawing the bubble people, so come and get one for just $1.

Angela will also be willing to do larger commissioned drawings (5*7) for $5 in the bubble people style.

Other than that, you will have to forgive our lack of posts. Angela started a certificate program in natural science illustration this fall and it is taking up all of her time! Comics have sadly fallen by the wayside for now. But by this summer she will be back on the horse after getting her certificate.

To keep you satisfied, here are some phone pics of what Angela has been doing.

Portland zine symposium

Abe and Angela will be plying their wares at the Portland zine symposium. It is in Ambridge Event Center from 10 to 6.
They will not be there tomorrow, so you better come today. They will even have a special preorder available for Angela's comic about her time at cartooning studio in Vermont at the Center for Cartoon Studies. You don't have to show up to get that, but they will have a free preview comic of it.
We will go into more detail about how to preorder tomorrow or Monday, right here!
Hope to see you in Portland!

Delicate Souffle

We have a new comic nice and ready. And there are two more coming!

First up we have Delicate Souffle. A woman with a delicate heart makes delicate chocolate souffles. Will she remain so delicate when her heart is broken?
You can buy it on our Etsy shop or at Comic Stop in the U District in Seattle.
We will also have it at Olympia Comic Festival this Saturday, June 8! And if you want to read it first, you can of course read the whole thing here.
Anyways, here are some gratuitous phone shots of the printing process.

Finished book!
Home from the printers, still in the plastic wrap.
2-up print job waiting to be cut.
Proofs on plain paper.

Ink Tub Show

We will be at Egress Studio this Saturday from 2-8. It is in Bellingham, so if you are in the area, I hope we see you.
We will have all sorts of stuff for sale. All our prints and comics. Even Abe will have some photos for sale (they are beautiful by the way). And Anita will have a bunch of stuff – poetry, prints, original art, cards. Great stuff. We are thinking, we might even sell some Jerks originals.
We will also have a raffle. $1 is one chance to win a set of cards from Anita of the Humane Society Dogs or Cats. And you will definitely get to pick one of four postcards that I drew. Proceeds of the raffle will be donated to the local Humane Society near Egress Studio, so the post cards have an animal theme.

Jet City Comic Show 2012

Why yes! We will be at the Jet City Comic Show! How did you ever guess? Oh, did you see that we are on their web site? Why yes you did! That’s wonderful. And did you know that we will have a new comic there? You didn’t?! For shame. Well, let me give you a hint. It is titledTighty-Whities and Their Men. You’ll have to come by to find out more. Or wait for us to put it online.
As a reminder, here’s where you can find us!

August 11 2012 Con Info

Just a quick reminder for everyone that Angela will be at GeekGirlCon on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend at booth 314. Also, Abe will be at the Portland Zine Symposium on Saturday. Abe is also teaching a one hour class titled Using Adobe InDesign to Create Layouts for Print. It starts at 11 am in room 2. So, drop in and take part!

News!

So in a month, you will be able to see Abe at the Portland Zine Symposium (Aug 11) and me at Geek Girl Con (Aug 11-12) with my mom. My brother, Isaac, will be watching the booth with Abe so he can, you know, eat and go to the bathroom. I will also have a new setup at my booth because I will only have half a table! But it will probably carry over into our over full table at other cons. As part of this consolidation, we will have the 2011 collection of Flying Dodo Comics (and the one 2010 comic) for sale at $20, which is a 33% discount! It includes a little wrapper to hold it all together. I will have some blank-ish ones with me at Geek Girl Con so I can draw something of your choosing.

In addition to comics, we will both have prints and I will have necklaces. There will be a few new prints, including “Alces caeruleus.” We will also be offering a special deal at conventions where you can buy “The Saddest Sasquatch” poster (20×30 inches) for free shipping. That’s a savings of $8. The necklaces are $20 for a single panel one and $30 for a 3 panel one. I hope you like them.  All of these will eventually be for sale online.
I also started a new web comic of my own auto-bio stuff, Spaz Hands. It is going to update on Tuesdays and Thursdays for now, but I have a lot so if it so if I can keep up, I might up it to Monday, Wednesday, Friday, eventually. Actually, I think this web comic will include three different styles for different types of comics. And who knows. Maybe I’ll have a sampler to give out at Geek Girl Con.

Abe has also started a new Etsy shop for his photography. I think they’re great, so check them out. His shop is Calamitous Platypus. The photos are mostly flowers, but lots of strange plants, really. Eventually, we might do something together with his photos similar to the photos at the end of Bubbles and other tales.

Olympia Comics Festival 2012

I am just under the wire getting a second blog post in for May. But this one is about June. Still counts. Anyways, guess where you can find Abe and me this Saturday. At the Olympia Comics Festival! Guess what they’ll have? Tons of stuff! All the usual comics and some new items that will be available for sale on our Etsy story after this comic fest.
We’ll have a new book there called Bubbles and other tales. It is hot off the presses. It is a collection of tiny little silent stories (for the most part) starring these little pillow people. I realized later that maybe I was inspired to make these characters by the adorable guys on MochiMochi. You might recognize the pillow people if you read my blog because they have turned into my go-to doodle. On Sunday, we will post a website for Bubbles and other tales.

I will also be doing small commissions. They are just simple little ones for $1 where I draw a pillow person based off an action and an emotion that you tell me. I will have some premade ones for $1 OBO (or best offer), too. These are only available at conventions. Oh, yeah, and you can grab a ready one for free with any purchase.
Apathetic Tetherball
We will also have Abe’s stuff, which means prints of Arthur and Georgie, bookmarks, and the pladycupidus t-shirts. And don’t forget that if you have an ashcan copy of Bubbles and other tales, which we handed out at Stumptown and should be available at the U District Comic Stop in Seattle, you get a free pillow people commission. Just bring your copy by!

Print madness

First, a reminder. Abe and I will be at the Jet City Comic Show (Seattle, WA) in just under a couple weeks! We will have a ton of stuff and would love you to come by and say hello. We are at booth AA68. It is September 24, Saturday, from 10-6 at the Seattle Exhibition Hall. We have been working hard getting ready.
What a busy weekend. On Saturday, Abe and I went up to Bellingham to print lots of stuff at my mom’s place, Egress Studio Press. But lucky us, we got to spend a couple hours driving around Seattle first looking for paper. Office Depot and Staples only carry paper that is too light-weight. So Paper Zone was the winner, even though it was heavier paper than we really wanted (28 lb. instead of 24lb.).
During this time driving around, we had to leave early and so stopped in at Starbucks for breakfast. I got a pumpkin scone and Awake tea because that is always what I get. Abe got coffee, which is a change for him in the last few weeks, and his usual cranberry scone. Their scones are actually good now, by the way. Anyways, the tea was too hot still when we got to Staples, so I wasn’t drinking it and forgot it in the car. When we got back to the car, Nisa had pulled it out of the cup holder and poured the whole thing out on my seat so she could drink it! Fortunately, there is a great drive-thru coffee, Gourmet Latte, place right next to Staples and Office Depot (which are across the street from each other) so I got another tea and the dogs, even idiot Nisa, got dog treats.
After all our driving around and drink buying, we eventually got up to Bellingham and started working away. I was a bit of a task master, but boy was it worth it. First up, my mom took pictures of Abe and me! It was hilarious. They have been put to good use, but I think they will have other uses as well. We had fun and were all laughing our heads off.
Then we ran upstairs to the computer. The first thing we worked on, because it was the last requirement for the Jet City Comic Show: Posters! We have one for The Jerks and one for Flying Dodo Publications. I am so glad she helped us because even though The Jerks poster was complete, we replaced some of the hand-written text with a font and it looks amazing. And she helped us with our Flying Dodo Publications poster and it could not look better. It is covered in a bunch of variations on the flying dodo, like this one, my favorite, called “Big Butt, Skinny Jeans.”

Now we finally have a saleable copy of Ooh! Shiny. Lovely goldenrod cover (the image does not do it justice). Japanese stab binding. I am still binding it, but as of this posting, 10 of the 100 books are complete. Japanese stab binding is so much fun. The first 100 copies have a hand-written dedication, but any after will have a printed dedication. After printing all theOoh! Shiny papers, Abe ran downstairs with them all and folded them in half.

Abe had to fold a lot of paper
We also finished The Fire Breather, which I did all the watercolor paintings for on the Labor Day weekend. Great fun. It is a small book, but full color.  I will post more about this on it’s own, but I am pretty dang pleased with it.
Just look at it all! Pages for "The Fire Breather" and "Ooh! Shiny"
The second to last thing we worked on was Fart Happens, the collection of the first year of The Jerks comics! It looks great! I am really excited for this. It is by far the biggest book we have done: 60 pages. We did not have time to print it, but my mom will bring it down this weekend. Abe did the layout and did a great job. I can’t believe how much he has learned about layout this summer. He is going to do great in his Publishing Arts program this coming year.
Finally, but not really, we made up a couple prints: Secrets (a Gertrude comic), and Two Birds on a Wire. So excited. We should have at least 5 different prints available at the Jet City Comic Show. Two Birds looks Great. They are huge prints on glossy paper.
Then for reals finally, we ran downstairs at 11:00 in the evening to cut up all the Ooh! Shiny and Fire Breather papers (two sets of pages printed per paper). We didn’t even leave until 11:30, so we sadly missed out on ice cream with my mom and Jim.
A couple days later, Monday, I got in the car at 6:30 in the morning to head to work. As soon as I opened the door, it smelled like something died in there. I sent Abe a panicked text, but I was running late, so I got in and drove to work. It smelled just as bad if not worse when I finished work. I forgot: I put milk in my tea and it was still apparently spilled in the back seat. Mostly on a blanket, so this evening, we put it in the wash and doused the tea spots in Febreeze. Dead animal and Febreeze go great together, let me tell you.

Bellingham ComiCon 2011

Great news. We will be attending the Bellingham ComicCon on October 22 this year! It is a one-day convention, Saturday, from 10am to 5pm at the Ferndale Events Center. We don’t know what booth we will be in, but when we know we will surely let you know. You should plan to come out and see us! It is a pretty low entry price if last year was any indication.
We will bring with us lots of stickers (free), maybe candy (also free), prints, and of course all our books. We hope to have at least three prints available, but if you have any prints in particular you would like see, feel free to let us know. Just send and email to us atflyingdodopublications@gmail.com. There may even be a surprise item for The Jerks, but we’ll see how it turns out. Ah, what a teaser.
